In a late-night press conference, Justin Trudeau said the protestors at a recent Ontario campaign stop were the angriest he'd ever seen.
Trudeau was scheduled to appear in Bolton, Ontario, on Friday, August 27, as part of his federal election campaign, but the event had to be cancelled due to protestors.
"We could not guarantee the safety of the people in attendance," Trudeau explained at a second stop later that evening. "The situation was such that we would have been putting volunteers — many of them have shown up here tonight — at risk. And that was not something I was willing to do."
According to the Caledon Enterprise, a "large group" of protestors showed up shouting and cursing at Trudeau before he was scheduled to speak on stage. After a two-hour delay, the event was cancelled and protestors attempted to chase the Liberal party vehicles leaving the scene.
"I've never seen this intensity of anger on the campaign trail or in Canada," Trudeau told reporters.
"I think this is something that Canadians, all of us, need to reflect on, because it's not who we are," the prime minister said. "It's not who we want to be as a country. We're a country that is comfortable with differences. We have to listen to each other."
