Gas Prices In BC Are Set To Rise In October & You Could Be Paying An Extra $10 A Month

Starting in October, gas prices in B.C. are set to get more expensive and some customers could be paying as much as $10 more on their monthly bill.

Utility company FortisBC got regulatory approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission to increase the cost of gas rates for all of its customers as of October 1, 2021, and it's because market prices are also increasing.

In the mainland and Vancouver Island, including North and South Interior, Whistler and Revelstoke, the cost of gas rate will change from $2.844 per gigajoule (GJ) to $3.844 per GJ. For residential customers, this means monthly bills will increase by about $8 based on an average household consumption of about eight GJs per month.

In Fort Nelson, the cost of gas rate will change by a little less than a dollar per GJ from $2.999 per GJ to $3.964 per GJ. For residential customers, monthly bills will increase by about $10 based on an average household consumption of around 10 GJs per month.

It's not just household gas prices that are getting more expensive; the cost of filling up at the pumps in B.C. reached record-breaking prices this summer.
