Police were called to break up a massive street party near Queen's University on Wednesday night, just as frosh week kicks off and students start to arrive in the city.
Kingston Police told Narcity that University Avenue was declared a "nuisance party" at 12:10 a.m. when roughly 2,000 people were caught partying in the street.
A video by the Kingstonist on Twitter shows officers asking partiers to vacate the area over the PA of a police cruiser as they try to disperse the crowds.
According to police, four people were arrested for public intoxication, and 10 people were handed court summons for having open alcohol in a public setting contrary to the Liquor Licence Act. One young individual also received a court summons for underage drinking.
After all the chaos, police told Narcity the street was cleared at 1:30 a.m.
Queen's University has since addressed the gathering in a statement by the principal, Patrick Deane, and the president of the Alma Mater Society, Zaid Kasim, released on Thursday.
"Over the last few days, large student gatherings have been occurring around our campus. This is a flagrant disregard for public health and for the law of our province. We support our city enforcement officers and police as they work to address these illegal activities and we will work with our partners when they refer students to us for processing under our Student Code of Conduct," they wrote.
The statement went on to say that "consequences for this behaviour will be imposed" for individuals who jeopardize the academic year, and noted that the majority of students "just want to learn in a classroom with their peers."
"We have been working for 18 months to get students back in the classrooms," they wrote. "Behaviour of a few cannot and indeed, should not compromise what we believe our students want from Queen's."
