There are many cultural differences between Canada and European countries and one newcomer to Canada is sharing his thoughts on some of them.
TikToker Andrian Makhnachov (@makhnachov), a Ukrainian refugee living in Saskatchewan, posted a video of the differences between his new and former home countries and many Canadians seem to appreciate his outside perspective.
"Differences between Canada and Ukraine that I noticed in the first days after moving," Makhnachov wrote in the first slide of the video.
His first observation is that Canadians are very polite and he highlights that even strangers will smile and greet you whereas in Ukraine people only greet those they know personally.
The TikToker also believes the hottest topic for discussion in Canada is the weather and he now understands why after experiencing winter in Saskatchewan.
Makhnachov also points out that Canadians "don't like to dress up" while in Ukraine your appearance is important and women will even put on make-up to take out the trash.
Other differences the Canadian newcomer shared include that no one uses public transportation in this country, laundry drying racks aren't a thing here, you can find "everything in large sizes in Canada" and slammed the fruit in Canada for being "kind of tasteless."
Another observation of his is that Halloween is celebrated in Canada and that no one gives tulips to women they know on March 8, which is International Women's Day, unlike in Europe.
The TikTok video has over 80,000 views and Canadians are sharing their thoughts on Makhnachov's observations.
"I LOVE the tulip idea! And kinda wish ppl did dress nicer here like in Europe. It's so nice to see," one person wrote.
"I love seeing Canada from an outside perspective. Now I'm curious about fruit in other places," another TikToker commented.
While other Canadians noted that the differences depend on where you live in Canada.
"Some of these definitely depend on the city! Tons of people use transit in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto too I think," one comment reads.
"Fruit tastes better from BC, Summerland or the Okanagan," one Canadian said while another noted that the "fruit taste depends on the time of year."
The video has garnered a lot of reaction since Makhnachov posted it and many people are requesting a part two so hopefully, the TikToker comes through with more differences he comes across!
