The House of Commons ethics committee is meeting on Wednesday to discuss Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent family trip to Jamaica.
The special meeting will focus on whether a study should be launched regarding Trudeau's vacation with his former wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau and their three kids over the holidays.
According to Global News, the request for the possible study was requested by Conservative MPs Michael Barrett, Jacques Gourde, Damien Kurek and Bloc Quebecois MP Rene Villemure.
The MPs sent a letter to the committee's chair on January 12 stating "serious questions" had been raised over the Caribbean trip and whether it "breaks Canada's ethics laws."
It also stated that Trudeau had initially said he would be paying for the trip and then changed his story to say the trip was free since the family was staying at a "location owned by a family friend."
The press secretary to the House Leader tells Narcity that the ethics commissioner was consulted about the trip.
"As the Prime Minister’s Office has said, the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner was consulted prior to the travel," Philippe-Alexandre Langlois said in an emailed statement on January 17.
"We have no comment on the independent work of the committee, as its members will make their own determinations on this matter."
The prime minister left for a 10-day trip to Jamaica on December 26, 2023 with his three kids and his former wife Grégoire Trudeau.
According to a report by the National Post the luxury resort is owned by Peter Green, a businessman who has known the Trudeau family for years.
The news outlet also states the resort rents for $9,300 per night, meaning the nine-night stay would cost about $84,000.
On January 3, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement that the family's stay at the resort in Jamaica would come "at no cost," but that Trudeau would "reimburse the equivalent of a commercial airline ticket for his personal travel and that of his family," as reported by CP24.
According to the National Post, this isn't the first time the Trudeau family has stayed at the resort, but the Prime Minister did not specify who paid for the previous trip.
