A Post Showing Chicken At Longo's For $40 Is Going Viral But Here's How Other Stores Compare

The price of food is top of mind for many Canadians which is likely why a post on Reddit showing a $40 price tag for chicken breasts at Longo's is causing outrage.

On the forum r/loblawsisoutofcontrol, a user posted a picture of what appears to be about two kilograms of boneless, skinless chicken breast with the caption, "Seriously, who's paying for this?"

The picture shows that the chicken costs $20.99 per kilogram, and while that does sound like a high number, it's also locally sourced as well as air-chilled and grain-fed, which could be contributing to the price. The exact weight is 1.93 kilograms, according to the photo.

In fact, similar products at other higher-end grocery stores cost just as much if not more than the Longo's chicken.

At Loblaws, President's Choice Free From Chicken Breast costs $24.45 per kilogram. At Fortinos, PC Blue Menu Air Chilled Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts costs $22.02 per kilogram and at Costco, Kirkland Signature Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts costs $18.69 per kilogram while Kirkland Signature Organic Boneless & Skinless Chicken Breasts cost $28.89 per kilogram.

Of course, there are more budget-friendly options out there for boneless, skinless chicken breast, but how much you spend and what qualifications you look for in a product, like if it's from Ontario or not, definitely add on to the final price tag.

In the comments, many chimed in about how much the prices of groceries are hurting their wallets.

"I don’t even recall the taste of chicken as it’s too expensive for me nowadays," wrote one user.

"Haven't you heard? Chicken is the new lobster!" joked another.

The latest Consumer Price Index did indeed show an increase of 3.4% year over year for food purchased in-store, so unfortunately, those might just be the prices we have to deal with for the time being.

These prices are confirmed at the time of publishing, but they can change at any time. Taxes and fees may not be included.
