Montreal's Jewish community on edge after blaze guts kosher restaurant

Montreal police are investigating after a fire heavily damaged a kosher restaurant overnight Saturday in the city's Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough.

While police say the investigation hasn't determined a motive, social media was flooded with statements of concern that this was yet another hate-motivated attack.

Police say the investigation remained in its early stages and no arrests had been made.

A video published by several media outlets, including the CBC, appears to show a man starting the fire before running away, though police have not confirmed those images.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said on social media the government was concerned by what appeared to be an arson attack targeting a gathering place for Montreal's Jewish community.

B'nai Brith Canada, a Jewish advocacy organization, also condemned the incident and called for action, saying Jewish Canadians need more than words of condemnation.
