These Hacks For Fighting Off Wasps Are Absolute Game Changers For Your Late Summer BBQ

Going outside right now isn't just bad because of the extreme heat — late summer is also peak wasp season, according to Reuters.

The good news is that there are ways to get rid of wasps and stop those pointy menaces from spoiling your barbecues, picnics and patio dinners, and none of them involve flailing around an electric bug zapper.

In the Reuters article, PETA specialist for wild animals Nadja Michler said that people can put a bowl of overripe fruit (ideally grapes) at a safe distance away to distract any nearby wasps.

Wasps also hate certain smells, Michler explained, so an open lemon with cloves, incense sticks or an incense lamp will help deter the insects. But be mindful of attractive smells, like perfumes or cosmetic products, and try and cover up open food and use screen doors to stop wasps exploring indoors.

If — heaven forbid — you are face-to-face with a wasp, Michler said not to make lash out or blow at the wasp, and instead not make abrupt movements and try not to panic.
