The countdown to New Year’s Day 2024 is on and you have so many options for watching the clock tick down to midnight, whether you’re waiting for the ball to drop in Times Square or you want to see the festivities in Canada on New Year’s Eve.

Here's what you need to know about watching the New Year's Eve countdown from Canada ahead of January 1, 2024.

Where can I watch the New Year countdown in Times Square?

If you're looking for the basic Times Square New Year's Eve countdown to 2024, you're in luck because we've got it embedded right here.

The official Times Square website streams its countdown for free online each year, and you don't need a cable subscription to watch.

Better yet, this webcast is entirely commercial-free.

You can expect the stream to start at 6 p.m. Eastern Time on December 31 and it will run until 15 minutes after midnight on January 1, 2024.

The webcast is hosted and features interviews and musical performances throughout. It's not nearly as star-studded as some of the other feeds, but if you want to see that ball drop, this is the easiest place to watch.

If you'd rather watch the countdown with the banter of Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen on your feed, you can find that on CNN beginning at 8 p.m.

As for that other New Year's Eve countdown...

Where can I watch the New Year's Rockin' Eve countdown 2024?

Ryan Seacrest will return to host the 2024 Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve countdown from New York City's Times Square on December 31, 2023. He'll be joined this year by Rita Ora as co-host along with Jeannie Mai, who will run festivities from Los Angeles.

The L.A. part of the broadcast will be particularly star-studded, with a winning mix of current and throwback musical acts in the broadcast. You can expect performances from Coco Jones, Doechii, Ellie Goulding, Green Day and Janelle Monae. Loud Luxury, Bebe Rexha, Ludacris, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Paul Russell, Renee Rapp and Jared Leto's band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, will also be part of the event.

We'll also be saying goodbye to the year of Barbie in style, with Barbie Girl band Aqua on hand to play a few of their hits.

Dick Clark's New Year's Rocking Eve will air on ABC in the United States and CityTV in Canada. The broadcast begins at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. You can watch CityTV online but you'll need a cable subscription, although you can also sign up for a free trial.

Where can I watch the New Year countdown in Canada?

If you want to watch Canada's live New Year's Eve countdown, you can do it for free with CBC. Expect Rick Mercer to return as host of the Canadian New Year's Eve show with plenty of homegrown content involved in the broadcast.

The public broadcaster will air its own Canada-made New Year's Eve countdown on your local CBC channel. You can also watch it live through the CBC Gem app, online through the CBC website or via YouTube.

Where can I watch the Miley Cyrus New Year's Eve special?

Unfortunately, it looks like Miley Cyrus won't be returning with her Miley's New Year's Eve Party on NBC this year.

New Year's Eve falls on a Sunday this time around, and that means the night belongs to the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings and Sunday Night Football on NBC.

That's OK though; Miley had a killer year with one of the top songs on Spotify and Apple Music. She can buy herself flowers and take the night off instead.

Where can I watch the New Year's Eve Nashville Big Bash in 2024?

If country is more your vibe or you simply live in Manitoba or Saskatchewan, you can find the New Year's Eve Live: Nashville's Big Bash broadcast airing live on CBS on December 31, 2023.

The Nashville countdown is your best bet if you're looking for a Central Standard Time ball drop. The show begins at 9:30 p.m. CST and runs until midnight. If you're outside of that timezone you can still catch an early countdown just before 10 p.m. Eastern, or hang in there and catch a late countdown at 1 a.m. PST.

You can expect performances this year from the likes of Thomas Rhett, Lynyrd Skynard and Lainey Wilson and many more.

The countdown will air on CBS.

What's open and closed on New Year's Day in Canada 2024?

Once the countdown is done, the calendar has switched over and you've slept off a night of revelry, you might be wondering what's left to do in Canada on New Year's Day.

New Year's Day 2024 falls on a Monday and is a statutory holiday. That means many places such as banks, grocery stores, government buildings and private businesses will be closed.

However, that doesn't mean you'll be out of luck. We've put together a list of what's open and closed in Ontario on New Year's Day 2024, so you'll know what your options are on January 1.

We've also rounded up a list of national restaurant chains that are known to open some or all of their stores on New Year's Day, so you'll have some options if you want to start the year by eating out.

What are the stat holidays in Canada for 2024?

If you're already ready for a break heading into 2024, we've got you.

There are several national statutory holidays on the calendar for Canadians in 2024, although the list is riddled with exceptions for certain provinces.

Fortunately, it's a pretty good year for long weekends because New Year's Day, Canada Day and Remembrance Day all fall on Mondays. The only really awkward holiday on the calendar in 2024 is Christmas Day, which will be on a Wednesday.

The year will also be a day longer because it's a leap year, meaning we're going to have a February 29 on the calendar.

The national statutory holidays in Canada in 2024 are:

  • New Year's Day — Monday, January 1, 2024
  • Good Friday — Friday, March 29, 2024 (Except Quebec, which gets Monday, April 1 off for Easter Monday)
  • Victoria Day — Monday, May 20, 2024 (Except Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador)
  • Canada Day — Monday, July 1, 2024
  • August Civic Holiday — Monday, August 5, 2024 (Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nunavut only)
  • Labour Day — Monday, September 2, 2024
  • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — Monday, September 30, 2024 (Federally regulated workplaces only)
  • Thanksgiving — Monday, October 14, 2024 (Except Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador)
  • Remembrance Day — Monday, November 11, 2024 (Except Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia)
  • Christmas Day — Wednesday, December 25, 2024

Happy New Year!
