If you're looking for a cheap getaway, Canada may not be the first place that comes to mind — however, it turns out the country is home to some of the cheapest places to travel to around the world, according to a new ranking.
Three Canadian cities were recently ranked among the top spots around the globe for a low-cost vacation, and they may be a surprise to locals.
The cities appeared in a list of the top wallet-friendly international destinations for travel in 2024 put together by travel search engine Kayak and shared with Narcity.
To create the list, Kayak says it analyzed flight searches from July 2023 through December 2023 for travel during 2024. The top 250 most clicked destinations with the lowest average combined flight and hotel prices were considered, excluding outliers based on criteria like travel restrictions and security concerns.
Here are the Canadian cities that made the list:
Toronto
While locals may say Toronto is anything but a cheap place, it looks like it may be a worthwhile spot for tourists.
The Ontario capital came in as the second-cheapest international destination to travel to in 2024, with an average flight and hotel cost of just US$692, or about CA$930.
It's worth noting that there are also tons of free things to do in Toronto, including attractions like the St. Lawrence Market, parks and green spaces like Allan Gardens, and eclectic neighbourhoods like Queen Street West.
Montreal
Montreal came in as the third cheapest spot to travel to, with a flight and hotel costing tourists US$705 (CA$948) on average.
What tourists may spend on accommodations here they can make up for by enjoying the many free and cheap things to do in the city, like visiting the Notre Dame Basilica, which costs $16, or exploring Mount Royal Park, which is free.
Vancouver
Finally, Vancouver was the third Canadian city on Kayak's list, coming in as the seventh cheapest place to visit around the world.
Like Toronto and Montreal, while Vancouver may be expensive to live in, it may be worth a trip — according to Kayak, tourists can expect to spend US$863 (CA$1,160) for their flight and hotel, on average.
There are also tons of free and low-cost things to do in Vancouver to make your money go further, like the iconic Stanley Park, which is free to visit, and Granville Island, which can make for an inexpensive daytime activity.
According to Kayak, the cheapest destination globally to visit in 2024 is Mexico City, Mexico, where tourists can expect to pay US$673 (CA$904), on average, for a flight and hotel.
