In 2014, Magnotta was found guilty of murdering 33-year-old student Jun Lin in Montreal in 2012. They were given the maximum sentence for their crimes.

According to a transfer warrant obtained by the Toronto Sun, Magnotta, who is now 41 years old, was granted a prison transfer in August 2022. The Canadian convicted killer was moved from Port Cartier maximum-security prison in Quebec to La Macaza Institution, which is a medium-security facility northwest of Montreal.

The outlet also reports that Magnotta's husband, whom they married in 2017, was transferred to the same institution.

It comes after Magnotta took the federal government to court in 2022 after a request to be moved from Port Cartier maximum-security prison to a medium-security facility was denied.

The Toronto Sun reports that Magnotta now says they are transgender, and has changed their first name to Violette.

"Gay is a choice. Trans is who I am," Magnotta said, according to a 2022 assessment obtained by the Toronto Sun.

In 2019, Netflix released a documentary about Magnotta's crimes titled Don't F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer.

The documentary detailed the 2012 crimes of Magnotta, who recorded a video brutally killing and dismembering Chinese International student, Jun Lin. Magnotta later mailed parts of Lin's body to multiple political parties and schools in Canada. The convicted killer then fled the country.

Following a global manhunt, Magnotta was arrested in an internet cafe in Berlin, Germany in June 2012, as reported by CTV News.

In 2014, Magnotta was found guilty of several crimes, including first-degree murder, committing an indignity to a human body, publishing obscene material, criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and mailing obscene and indecent material.

They were sentenced to life in prison for Lin's murder and received the maximum sentence for all the other charges against them.

In 2017, Magnotta married fellow inmate Anthony Jolin, as per the Montreal Gazette. The marriage took place inside the Port Cartier prison and Magnotta's mother, Anna Yourkin, was a witness.
