Northern lights could be seen from almost everywhere in Canada tonight

Look up because the northern lights could be visible almost everywhere in Canada tonight!

That includes cities that don't usually see the aurora like Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal.

NOAA's northern lights forecast for Thursday, February 27 revealed that a "more intense" aurora is expected in central parts of Canada but could be visible almost everywhere in the country.

An alert for moderate and minor geomagnetic storms on Thursday said the aurora could even be seen as far south as New York and Washington states.

NOAA's forecast also includes a view line that shows how far south the aurora might be seen on the northern horizon.

The "more intense" aurora is expected to be visible in Prince George, Edmonton, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Saskatoon.

Less intense northern lights could also be seen in places like Kelowna, Calgary, Lethbridge, Regina, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay.

The view line for Thursday night includes Vancouver, Victoria, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, and Moncton.

That means the northern lights could be seen along the northern horizon in those places.

Wondering about the northern lights in Ontario?

Most of northern Ontario is expected to see a less intense aurora and southern Ontario — including Toronto and the GTA — is just on the cusp of the view line.

So, the northern lights might not be visible in southern Ontario tonight.

If you're trying to spot the aurora, the Canadian Space Agency has northern lights viewing tips you should know about.

The northern lights typically appear a few hours after sunset and become more intense around midnight.

Once the sky is dark, find a place with little to no light pollution. If you're somewhere a less intense aurora is forecast, city lights can block your view.

Then, look all over because auroras can appear anywhere in the sky.

However, if you're somewhere along the NOAA view line, the northern lights will only be visible near the northern horizon.

You can also check where the northern lights are in real time with NOAA's 30-minute aurora forecast. The northern lights can be seen from as far as 1,000 kilometres away when bright enough!
