This TikTok Might Have You Believing Austin Powers Is Running In The Federal Election

Election campaigns can get pretty wild so nobody would fault you if you saw this TikTok and thought Austin Powers was running in the 2021 Canadian federal election with the slogan "make Canada groovy again."

Darcy Tiderman posted a video on TikTok of his Winnipeg neighbourhood and the mock campaign sign he had created for the made-up International Man of Mystery party candidate, which he placed on his lawn. Narcity spoke with him to get all the details about his hilarious contribution to the election.

Tiderman came up with this idea because he has watched Austin Powers quite a few times. He thought the slogan "make Canada groovy again" was something the character would say. He mimicked the style of other campaign signs to make it look legit and his friend came up with the party name and logo.

"It's just something for people to have a chuckle at when they drive by," he said.

The Austin Powers sign isn't the biggest in the neighbourhood, but Tiderman placed it in a spot on his lawn where people can easily see it. He often spots people taking pictures of the sign and his neighbours have told him that they really get a kick out of it.

"2020 has been a rough year and 2021 is semi-rough so it's nice to get people to talk, rally together and have a quick laugh," he said.

For the federal election in 2019, Tiderman had a campaign sign with Darth Vader as the candidate for the Your Galactic Empire party.

He got the idea from something similar he saw someone do in Ontario and kept it for two election cycles but retired it for 2021.

"I wanted to do a different sign for every election year," Tiderman said. He told Narcity that he's already coming up with ideas for what sign to do in the next election!
