These Are The Best Tim Hortons Items Every Canadian Needs To Try, According To Narcity's Team

Picking up your favourite treat at Tim Hortons is as Canadian as maple syrup on ice, but when it comes to what exactly your favourite menu item is, there are so many Timmies goodies to pick from.

Maybe you're a Timbit fanatic and adhere to strict Timbit etiquette; perhaps you yearn for the days of yore when you could grab a Dutchie, which has since been retired from the Tims' menu but is currently back for a limited time along with three other retro donuts; or maybe you just really like a good old fashioned cup of Timmies coffee!

They're all good and valid choices, but just in case you haven't explored the full gamut of Tim Hortons classics, Narcity's team dished on their own personal favourite menu items that I firmly believe all Canadians must try at least once (dietary restrictions permitting, of course!).

From sweet to savoury and everything in between, here are the Timmies items that Narcity's team absolutely loves.

Timbits

A box of Timbits is a spectacular addition to almost every situation and Jackie Vandinther cites the "elusive Blueberry Timbit" as her favourite while Lisa Belmonte's is Chocolate Glazed.

Both Mike Chaar and Asymina Kantorowicz prefer to get a box of assorted Timbits, with Kantorowicz explaining that she likes to enjoy the variety of donut flavours, especially Chocolate Glazed and Sour Cream Glazed.

The most common Timbits you're likely to find are the Birthday Cake Timbit, Chocolate Glazed Timbit, Honey Dip Timbit and Old Fashioned Plain Timbit.

If you're lucky, your local store might also stock Apple Fritter, Old Fashion Plain, Old Fashion Glazed, Sour Cream Glazed, Blueberry, Strawberry, Raspberry or Lemon, but as Vandinther noted, some of the flavours are quite elusive.

If you're hitting up a Timmies outside of Canada, there are all kinds of fun international flavours to try like Apple Pie, Dulce de Leche, Matcha, Caramel Macchiato, Cheesecake, Red Dates, Salted Egg Yolk, Pistachio, and Boston Cream.

Donuts and sweets

The Honey Cruller donut got some mega love from two team members.

"I love their Honey Cruller - it's super sugary but often soft and crumbly," said Josh Elliot. "Best donut on the list IMO."

"I second the Honey Cruller, it's like a light airy cake donut!" said Katherine Caspersz. "Love me a sour cream glazed donut as well, a classic.

For Josh McRae, he likes to pick up Chocolate Chip Muffins, while Belmonte is a fan of Apple Fritters which also happens to be Canada's favourite Tim Hortons donut in 2023.

"The Apple Fritter has always been a top donut at Tims but since adding 40 per cent more apples to our recipe last year I can confidently say we've never made a better version of this all-time classic," said Axel Schwan, president of Tim Hortons.

Drinks

The Iced Capp was listed as a favourite by several staff members, some of whom say it's a go-to summer treat while others think it's more of a year-round menu item, because cold drinks in the winter honestly just makes sense.

Vandinther says she enjoys the Oat London Fog while Chaar prefers to keep it simple with a tried and true classic: chocolate milk.

Thankfully, no one on the team recommends trying out TikTok's "Wayne Gretzky" which is a Tim Hortons coffee with nine creams and nine sugars — if that's what you're into, you do you! Or stick to the iconic Double Double, which was Tims' most popular coffee order in 2023.

Savoury

@sarazelko

My friends always make fun of me for eating this at a pre😂 #timhortons #timhortonscanada #chickennoodlesoup #soup #canadianproblems #fyp

In terms of savoury, our MTLBlog crew shouted out two sandwiches.

Sofia Misenheimer loves the Chicken, Bacon, Ranch wrap (crispy only) while Chaar recommended the ‘Club à la Tim’ sandwich, which is known in Ontario as a Turkey Bacon Club, although he does have a gripe with Timmies regarding the item.

"The OG sandwich was made with honey mustard but now it’s just mayo," he lamented. He said what he said, Timmies!

For Narcity's Morgan Leet, she goes for the Everything Bagel with cream cheese and bacon.

"Bacon is key!" she noted, even though it'll cost you a little bit extra to add it in there.

And, for myself, my go-to favourite Tim Hortons item is their Chicken Noodle Soup. If I'm sick, hungover or feeling grumpy, something about that soup fixes me right up.

I think the soup at the restaurant itself is better than the tinned soup you can pick up from grocery stores, but I do keep a few tins on hand, particularly in the winter when it's far too cold outside to get it yourself and you just want some Timmies goodness.

So there you have it! Whether you're looking for a new pastry, drink or meal item to try, there are plenty of options from Narcity's team for you to explore and fall in love with yourself.

While you're picking up your favourite treat or trying something new from this list, you might want to grab one of the four retro donuts that Tim Hortons recently brought back to their menu: the Dutchie, Blueberry Fritter, Cinnamon Sugar Twist and Walnut Crunch. I recently taste-tested the four pastries and the donut I enjoyed the most ended up being the one that I thought I would like the least.

Who knows what they'll bring back next — maybe it'll be the truly iconic Timbiebs.

If you're less picky about what food items you get, you can always try out the food waste reduction app Too Good To Go which connects you to Tim Hortons locations in some cities that have unsold food at the end of the day that would have been thrown out, even though it's still totally fine to eat.

The average Tim Hortons bag via the app will cost you $4.99 and has a value of about $15 worth of donuts, Timbits, cookies, muffins and potentially other items, which just might lead to you discovering a new menu item to fall in love with!
