You can get up to $566 extra in your GST/HST Credit payments if you're in one of these spots

If you're expecting a GST/HST Credit payment this week, there might be more money headed your way than expected — especially if you live in certain parts of Canada.

This quarterly government payment from the Canada Revenue Agency is meant to help lower- and modest-income Canadians manage the cost of sales taxes like the goods and services tax (GST) and harmonized sales tax (HST), and the next instalment hits bank accounts on Friday.

But did you know that in addition to the federal credit, several provinces and territories offer their own top-ups that get included in the same payment? What's more, you could be eligible for many of them even if you aren't eligible for the base federal credit.

This including the final round of carbon tax rebates for the provinces and territories that handle them separately from the federal system.

These extra amounts are distributed by the CRA alongside the federal GST/HST Credit and can vary significantly depending on where you live. For eligible residents of these nine provinces and territories, that could mean receiving up to $566.75 more every three months.

Plus, the provincial and territorial credits are assessed automatically when you file your taxes, so there's no need to submit a separate application.

Here's a look at the nine provincial and territorial top-ups that could be adding extra dollars to your GST payment this week.

British Columbia

People in B.C. could see one last boost to their GST/HST Credit payment this week, thanks to the BC Climate Action Tax Credit — a tax-free quarterly payment that helps offset the cost of carbon taxes for low-income individuals and families.

For the current payment cycle, the maximum you can receive each quarter is:

  • $126 for an individual, plus
  • $63 for a spouse or common-law partner or the first child in a single-parent family, and
  • $31.50 for each subsequent child

That means a family of four could get up to $252 extra in their GST/HST Credit payment this week.

The amount starts to decrease once your income goes above $41,071 as a single or $57,288 as a family. It's automatically added to your quarterly GST/HST Credit, no extra application needed.

This will be the final BC Climate Action Tax Credit payment. After the federal fuel charge was scrapped in March, B.C. also repealed its own consumer carbon tax — and with it, this benefit is coming to an end.

New Brunswick

In New Brunswick, eligible residents can receive extra money with their GST/HST Credit payment through the New Brunswick Harmonized Sales Tax Credit (NBHSTC). This tax-free quarterly benefit is designed to help offset the cost of the province's higher sales tax for low- and modest-income households.

For the current benefit cycle, the maximum you can receive each quarter is:

  • $75 if you're single
  • $75 more for a spouse or common-law partner or the first child in a single-parent family
  • $25 for each additional child under 19

A family of four can receive up to $200 every quarter through this credit.

Payments start to decrease if your adjusted family net income is over $35,000. Like the federal portion, this amount is distributed automatically by the CRA as part of your regular GST/HST Credit payment.

Newfoundland & Labrador

If you're living in Newfoundland and Labrador, your GST/HST Credit payment might include a little extra, thanks to three provincial programs that offer quarterly top-ups for low-income residents, seniors and people with disabilities.

Each quarter, the Newfoundland and Labrador Income Supplement (NLIS) provides up to:

  • $130 for an individual, plus
  • $17.25 if you have a spouse or common-law partner, and
  • $57.75 per child under 19

A family of four can receive up to $292.75 from the NLIS each quarter.

If you're eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, you may also receive the Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Amount (NLDA) — $57.75 per quarter. If your partner also has a disability that makes them eligible for the DTC, they can receive the credit as well.

Plus, seniors may benefit from the Newfoundland and Labrador Seniors' Benefit, which offers $379 per quarter for single seniors or eligible couples.

If you're eligible for all three credits, you can get up to $566.75 per quarter as an individual. All three credits are paid automatically with your GST/HST Credit.

Northwest Territories

Residents of the Northwest Territories will see their final quarterly top-up this week, as the Northwest Territories Cost of Living Offset (COLO) is ending. This tax-free payment was created to help offset the territory's consumer carbon tax, but with the federal fuel charge now axed, the Northwest Territories is also phasing out its own — and the COLO along with it.

Your quarterly payment varies based on where you live:

  • In Zone A — which includes Yellowknife, Hay River and other communities — it's $110.25 per adult and $126.25 per child
  • In Zone B — comprising Inuvik, Behchoko and more — it's $112.75 per adult and $128.75 per child
  • In Zone C — including Norman Wells, Ulukhaktok and others — it's $117.50 per adult and $133.50 per child

That means a family of four in Zone C could receive up to $502 per quarter.

The payment isn't reduced based on income and is automatically included with your GST/HST Credit. April marks the final payment of this benefit.

Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, residents with low or modest incomes may see a little extra in their GST/HST Credit payment thanks to the Nova Scotia Affordable Living Tax Credit. This quarterly benefit is designed to offer additional help offsetting the HST and easing the cost of living.

For the benefit cycle from July 2024 to June 2025, the maximum you can receive each quarter is:

  • $63.75 for an individual or a couple
  • $15 per child

That means a family of four can receive up to $93.75 every quarter.

The credit starts to decrease when your adjusted family net income goes over $30,000. Like other provincial top-ups, this payment is automatically included in your regular GST/HST Credit from the CRA.

Nunavut

April marks the final payout for the Nunavut Carbon Credit, which was designed to help residents handle the cost of the federal carbon pollution pricing levy. While Nunavut participated in the federal carbon pricing system, it issued its own quarterly rebate separately through this program — and with the federal fuel charge now cancelled, this benefit is ending too.

For the final payment, residents of the territory can receive $25 per member of their household. That means a family of four can receive $100 extra in their GST payment this quarter. There is no income threshold, meaning all Nunavummiut are eligible.

The credit is tax-free, fully funded by Nunavut and automatically included in your quarterly GST/HST Credit payment.

Prince Edward Island

If you live in P.E.I., your GST/HST Credit payment might include an extra boost thanks to the Prince Edward Island Sales Tax Credit. This quarterly payment is meant to help low- and modest-income households manage the cost of the province's sales tax.

For July 2024 to June 2025, the quarterly payment maximums are:

  • $41.25 for an individual, plus
  • $13.75 for one spouse, common-law partner or eligible dependant

A family of two or more could receive up to $55 this quarter. The total amount is reduced gradually if your family income is below $41,000 or over $50,000.

The credit is automatically included in your quarterly GST/HST Credit payment and is fully funded by the province.

Saskatchewan residents with low and modest incomes may see a top-up in their GST/HST Credit payment thanks to the Saskatchewan Low‑Income Tax Credit. This tax-free quarterly payment is designed to help qualifying households with the rising cost of living.

  • $99.50 for an individual, plus
  • $99.50 for a spouse, common-law partner or eligible dependant, and
  • $39.25 per child (up to two children)

That adds up to a maximum of $277.50 per quarter for a family of four.

The credit begins to phase out when adjusted family net income exceeds $37,584, with partial payments available up to an income of $77,947.

This credit is fully funded by the Saskatchewan government and is included automatically with your GST/HST Credit payment.

Yukon

Yukoners will also see their final Yukon Government Carbon Price Rebate payment for individuals this April. The territory used this rebate to return revenue from the federal carbon pollution pricing levy, but with the fuel charge now cancelled, this benefit is being phased out too.

For the final quarterly payment, Whitehorse residents can receive $77.50 per household member, while all other residents of the territory can get $93 per person.

That means a family of four could receive $310 this quarter, and a rural family could receive $372.

This tax-free credit is not reduced based on income and is automatically included with your GST/HST Credit payment. April is the final scheduled payment for this rebate.

Meanwhile, If you live in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario or Quebec, your monthly GST/HST Credit payment will include only the federal portion, as these provinces administer any tax rebate payments they have through different channels.

For example, the Ontario Trillium Benefit provides sales tax relief to eligible Ontarians monthly. Plus, the consumer carbon tax rebate for most provinces is paid out through the Canada Carbon Rebate.
