Sophie Grégoire Trudeau Has Spoken Out Before About The 'Heavy Storms' She & Justin Went Through

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau once opened up about the "sunny days, heavy storms and everything in between" she and Justin Trudeau went through during their relationship and before their separation.

For their wedding anniversary on May 28, 2022 — a little over a year before they announced their break up — she posted on Instagram a snap she took of two old photos: one of her when she was a kid with tennis balls in her shirt and one of Trudeau when he was young holding a stuffed animal.

"You had your Mrs. Bunny and I had my tennis balls! We kind of look alike, don't we? Who knew little Sophie would find little Justin and build a life together one day," she said.

Then, after the throwback, Grégoire Trudeau went on to talk about her relationship with Trudeau throughout the years.

"Together for 19 years, married for 17," she said at the time. "We have navigated through sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between and it ain't over."

"You all know I keep things honest: long-term relationships are challenging in so many ways," Grégoire Trudeau continued.

"They demand constant work, flexibility, compromise, sacrifice, devotion, patience, effort, and so much more."

She also mentioned that nobody is perfect, which means no relationship is perfect either.

"Love is only true when it keeps you safe, sets you free, and makes you grow."

Grégoire Trudeau ended her post celebrating their wedding anniversary with "omnia vincit amor," which means love conquers all in Latin.

To celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary in 2022, Trudeau also posted on Instagram and revealed that he knew Grégoire Trudeau was "the one" on their first date.

"I knew from our very first date that you were the one, Sophie," he wrote at the time. "From Khyber Pass on Duluth to Kejimkujik National Park and everywhere in between, every minute with you is special. I love you… happy anniversary, mon amour."

Justin and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau's separation

On August 2, 2023, Trudeau and Grégoire Trudeau announced that they had decided to separate "after many meaningful and difficult conversations."

"As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build," they said in a joint statement.

"For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy."

Trudeau has also opened up about difficulties in their relationship before, including in 2021 when he revealed the "complicated" situation they were in when they met.

"Let's just say we were both in a bit of a complicated phase in our personal lives. As soon as I met Sophie, I knew it was something serious with a lot of potential," he said. "I didn't want to go too fast, I didn't want to miss my chance. I had to fix a few things in my life before I could just focus on her."

When it was suggested that he had to end a relationship before he could start dating Grégoire Trudeau, he said, "You could put it that way."
