I tried all 3 new Knorr Rice Cup flavours & this 1 surprised me the most

Everyone knows the struggle of finding affordable, quick, tasty and nutritious food that keeps you going when you're run off your feet.

Knorr Rice Cups have arrived, and they're a serious contender for your new go-to quick meal you can rely on when time is tight and hunger is real.

Available at your nearest grocery store, the cups come in three flavours (Chicken Flavoured Fried Rice, Three Cheese Mushroom Risotto, and Mexican Rice And Beans) and just need two-and-a-half minutes in the microwave to turn into a complete mini-meal containing a quarter cup of veggies and 6 grams of protein — no kitchen skills needed.

To see whether these cups deliver on their promise of being affordable, yummy, quick, and nutritious, I picked up all three flavours from my local Walmart and tested them out.

First impressions

I was impressed that they're ready in only two-and-a-half minutes and offer 6 grams of protein in such a convenient cup. The containers are sturdy, and I could toss them in my bag without any concern — a critical trait considering you'll be carrying them to university or work to stay fueled during the day.

The packaging is also 100% recyclable, and the preparation instructions are easy to understand. All you need to do is remove the film, add cold water to the line marked on the inside of the cup, stir and microwave on high.

The instructions also recommend letting the cup sit for three minutes before eating so it can cool. During this time, the mixture thickened, helping the rice become even more plump and yummy.

As each Knorr Rice Cup cooked, it released a mouthwatering aroma into the kitchen, genuinely smelling like a savoury meal simmering away on the stove. But instead of hands-on cooking for up to an hour (looking at you, risotto), I could tuck into them after just a few minutes.

Knorr Rice Cups are definitely affordable, too. Thanks to a promotion, I picked up all three flavours for under $10, but even without it, they still retail for only $3.47 each.

Three Cheese Mushroom Risotto

Making a rich and creamy risotto the traditional way is notoriously time consuming, so I wanted to see whether Knorr could achieve the same result in just two and a half minutes with a microwave.

The Three Cheese Mushroom Risotto is the flavour that surprised me the most. Since my microwave is less powerful, I added an extra minute to the cooking time. After resting for a few minutes, the risotto was al dente and undeniably creamy, with a generous amount of mushroom pieces per bite.

Chicken Flavoured Fried Rice

When I pulled back the lid on the Chicken Flavoured Fried Rice, I was surprised by the visible bounty of peas, carrots, onion, and garlic. Once done in the microwave, they become tender and flavourful, and each mouthful has a satisfying rice-to-veggie ratio.

A perfectly satisfying and convenient meal on its own, the Chicken Flavoured Fried Ricewould also make a handy side dish. If you have time, you could add some green onions or fried egg to take it to the next level.

Mexican Rice & Beans

Rice and beans have been helping people eat delicious, affordable food for ages, and this convenient cup from Knorr does a fabulous job with them. Loaded with red beans, red and green bell peppers, onion, and garlic, the Mexican Rice And Beans cup packs a nutritious punch too.

Resting the cup for a few minutes after cooking allows the rice to soak up the rich flavour and transform into plump separate grains with an ideal chewy texture.

There's no doubt that Knorr Rice Cups taste great and are convenient, affordable and nutritious, making them an ideal solution for anyone pressed for time who needs a quick feed.

Some of Canada's busiest people are already benefiting from the convenience of Knorr Rice Cups. Early in April, Knorr hosted Cup All Night, handing out free Knorr Rice Cups to students at Laurier, McMaster, Waterloo and Queens after on-campus food services closed.

If you're in the market for a quick and nutritious meal that's also super tasty and easy to prepare, check out Knorr Rice Cups at your closest Walmart or supermarket.
